But is there a way of selecting objects and telling them to drop until they hit something, or is it as you place them only?

Could you use the eyedropper to copy the properties of the existing object, delete it, then with gravity 'on' place the object again in the same place?

Or just create a temporary section and adjust the height by dragging in there.
Then you can delete the section line afterwards.
