Point Cloud - Rotate Z and Y axis

Hi. I am using the iPhone to create point clouds for small rehabilitation works. I am testing the apps 3dscanner, Canvas and Modelar. With all of them I have the same problem: When exporting to .e57 or .xyz, the Y and Z axes not only do not have the position exchanged, but also, they are placed in mirror.
I have used Cloud Compare with the .xyz import and swapped the z and y axis. That's easy, but changing the sign to avoid mirroring, I don't know how to do it. Any idea?
BTW... wouldn't it be easier if this could be done with the library object inside Archicad?
(Another suggestion for the "wish list")

Hello Atort,

Why do not you import e57 into Archicad from Cloudcompare ?

You can use this tool to rotate all object so pointcloud too :

I have never seen a mirror effect between cloudcompare and Archicad but I am ready to test your file to understand your concerns and find the best solution.

Yes!

Rotator.gsm solved it. Easy to use and straight to the point I needed.

Thanks a lot, Christophe!

Just in case anyone may need it, this is the workflow I followed:

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max (iOS15.2) + 3DScanner App (Build 1.9.5) -> Scan the space needed
  • Option Share Model -> Point Cloud -> XYZ color, space delimited (You may also use .e57 or XYZ Color, but I got better results with this option).
  • Archicad 25 (24 also tested and ok) File/Interoperability/Import Point Cloud
  • Rotate.gsm: Enter the library part name of the object needed to rotate in the "Name of library part to rotate" parameter field.
  • Rotation parameters: X:0º, Y:90º, Z:90º
  • Voilà!

It's also simple to open the point cloud object and add to the 3d script

Hi Atort,

I have started looking at scanning (iphone pro or similar) for renovation projects.

Can you give your impressions on how succesful it is in practice?

Thank you.

Hi,
Most of my professional activity as an architect is focused to the reform and renovation of houses in the countryside and also for interior design works.
For this type of projects, the use of an iPhone (13 Pro Max) solves perfectly the data acquisition. Its accuracy is more than enough for me (distortion no more than 2%).
The recommended distance to obtain the scan is no more than 4 or 5 meters.
You have to try which software best suits your needs. I have tried several and, finally, the two I use are "3d Scanner App" and "Modelar".
Anyway, if the building you have to intervene on is large or complex, my advice is to hire a specialist with a Faro or Leika equipment, combined with a survey from a total station.

Thank you.

My projects are often very old buildings in the countryside here in France. The geometrics can be a challenge sometimes because nothing is square or straight and this seems like a good solution.

Yes, I was wondering if for small and simple projects an iphone would suffice.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, that's why I was trying to find an easier way to take my own data from a portable device, easy to use and introduce data into my Archicad models.

I've started a few weeks ago and the results are fine enough for me. We're trying to optimize our workflow but I'm sure we'll get used to this new process very soon.

Just FYI, the new version of Modelar (1.7.1) keeps the data in a right-handed coordinate system when exporting clouds and meshes with Z up, which will hopefully help with your mirroring issue.  Please feel free to reach out to info@modelar.ai if you're still having trouble!
