however, I have white fills in my trees and want to make the white 50% transparent so that things like benches, sidewalks etc can be seen in a lighter tone.
so far, any % of white, still prints solid white.
Any suggestions or tricks?
thanks

It depends on the trees. If there is a parameter for the cover fill try setting that to 50%. If not you should be able to turn off the cover fill and add a 50% fill separately.

If your trees are objects then you not only have to change the fill type but also the fill background pen to be transparent and the fill hatch pen to the colour you want.
I have seen some objects where you can't always control the background or hatch pens even though you can change the fill type - just bad scripting.
