20.1 inch laptop Processors

Not applicable
Im looking at new laptops with 20.1 inch diplays.

The choices in processors seems to be

1. AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 Dual Core Processor

or

2. Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
up to

3. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme Processor X7800 (2.6GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)

Anyone know how the AMD's perform?

Thanks,

Steve,

I had checked out the unit at Dell. I liked many of the features however, you can't upgrade the video card beyond the 256 MG. Any idea how it performs running Archicad?

Thanks,
That was my objection too.

You can get the NVIDIA® Quadro FX 3500M, 512MB
with the Dell M90.

I think I am going to keep my old M60 and get one of these Render Nodes instead of buying a new M90 or someting. The cost is about the same, and my old computer runs ArchiCAD just fine.

This would be a great deal. http://www.bellcomputer.com/clearance.htm
used Intel 1u render node, Dual Xeon 3GHz, 64-bit, 800FSB, 2mb, 4gb RAM, genuine Intel SR1435VP2 1u server, 80gb SATA drive. $1,000.00US
That's right. 1000 not 10,000.

Steve,

HP has the new HDX model but they don't offer hard drives faser than 5400 rpm and they do not allow for RAID configuration for striped or mirrored hard drives. Please check out this from Hypersonic and give me your thoughts.

Thanks,
I will take mine in Red please.

Steve,

Do you have any comment on the AMD Turion processors?
No. But if I did, it would be worth about as much my other comments.
Not much.

I have gone through quite a few computers in the last 25 years though.

All things considered, I think the Dell Workstations are great.

I have a strong preference for PC's because of my other software, Xeon processors, and nVIDIA graphics cards.

When I buy an new computer, I try to buy the fastest, and biggest one I can get at the time. By the time it's paid for they seem just barely adequate. If I had purchased something middle of the road, it would be inadequate too soon.
This is more true with each computer I get.

If I were to buy today, I would get a system that I can double 3 or 4 years from now so I don't have to buy another computer. I have too many already sitting around here.

Start with:
(1) Quad Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 3.00GHz, 2 X 4MB L2,1333)
(1) 256MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 3500,
(4)GB, DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, 667MHz, ECC in Riser (4 DIMMS)

This system should last you 4 years or so. Then you can double it. Dual Xeon's, Dual Graphics cards, and Double the RAM or as much as you can afford.

8 years from now, even this will probably be inadequate. ?? By then you will be running ArchiCAD 19 with a holographic modeling add-on.
Tip on leasing:

Good tax advantage, but don't lease from the manufacture like Dell or others. Use a private leasing company like Brickhouse. http://www.brickhousecapital.com/index.html

Pick out your system, let them get it and lease it to you. Your rates will be much better.

Steve, thanks for the advice. I have done much the same with dell as you. I just don't care for clunky desktops any longer. I have a dell precision work station 4 years old with twin 2.66 xeon that is only good enough as a printer server now.
