We use the Matrox G550 cards on dual 19" CRTs. Works great. Allows you to work in many windows at one time (Plan/Story, 3D, Section/Elevation, etc.). Or you can do as you are asking, expand all of your palettes and access from 1 monitor and use the other monitor for working.

i have a notebook w/ a 1600x1200 uxga screen that i keep my navigator windows for both ac8 & pm3 open on as well as web browser, email ect. that leaves my 21" crt to keep as my main work area. works great. it would probably be even better ergonomicaly if i used an external keyboard & put the notebook up on the raised desktop w/ the crt. oh well, just waiting for those 23"+ lcd's to drop in price a bit more. or for a notebook that supports 2 (or more) external 19" lcds.

I myself use a dual set up and theres no other way of working in my opinion. Get a good card...ATI 9800 pro or Nvidia Gf series with dual outputs 128mb min. I use 2-21inch CRTs ( Yeah Id love an Apple Cinema too) I have floor plan on one screen and 3D on other. Pretty cool when your showing clients or co-workers your ideas and you do changes and they see it on the 3D screen instantly. 21" CRTs are pretty affordable now. Even trinitrons. Hell....I picked up 2 used ones for 'bout $150.00 each.( Some local bank wanted to have their desks looking cool with the fancy smancy 20" LCDs.)
Work great. No complaints here.

my main monitor is a 23" cinema display, and on my 17" LCD, i put all floating palettes, and info boxes, or tutorials, or anything else i want to read as i work, and whenever i sit down at a comp with a single monitor i realize how spoiled i am . IWithout a doubt, its the way to go. just get your self a good card. I ended up buying a quadra FX 200, because i sometimes run MAYA and ArchiCad at the same time, so with larger files, lag time is at a minimal with a good card when navigating,
