Stupid Mac Questions but....

I'm relatively new to macs and have not been able to find an answer to these questions on the apple site so.

1. I assume that if you want to delete an application you just drag it to the trash - this seems to work for most but one or two will not oblige - should I be doing something else.

2. I notice that the downloads folder is full of hot-fixes etc which have been installed can these be deleted from the downloads folder without causing problems.

I ask these questions as I need to make room on my HDD.

Generally you can do as you say Chris. Check the app you want to delete some,
not all, may have an Uninstall app within it's folder. I use these first as they will generally trash
most if not all files scattered in other places such as your Preferences Folder.
There are 3rd party apps which can Force the trash to empty if this is what you are referring to by "will not oblige".

I d'load to my Desktop and when installed generally delete/trash as you can
always d'load again should you need too.

I left "the Dark side" many years ago and it is the best decision yet.
A number of colleagues locally around our vintage have recently done so and are very happy.
Stick with it you will not regret your decision.
Finally see if there are any local Mac user group forums, I found them to be invaluable, still do.

One more thing Chris, you can go to your profile at the top of the page,
there you can set your signature up not needing to add for each post

Thank you very much for that Rod.

Although I have had the iMac for a couple of years now it's only now with the downturn in work that I'm getting to look under the bonnet.

One more question if I may, I have spent the last hour or so on the Apple web site trying to discover what exactly a "Disk Image" is, but it doesn't seem to have occurred to them that anybody might want to know, can the disk images and .dmg files in the downloads folder be zapped as well.

I am hesitating to do so because I'm not well versed enough in mac's to know if there is a linkage between the contents of this folder and live applications etc.

Once you have used them, they can be deleted.

It is never too late to go to Australia.
