profiled walls - core dimension not working

I have a pretty standard profiled wall
exterior cladding (finish)
timber stud (core)
plasterboard (finish)

the dimension tool is not picking up the core dimension, despite the setting toggled on or off.
any ideas ?

How are you placing the dimension?

Are you clicking on the corner nodes of the wall?
Are you clicking on the edge of the wall?
Or are you using the automatic dimension command?

tried everything,
went to bed at midnight, today problem went away after a restart.
These things always seem to happen with a looming deadline,
