I realize this is because of the grass material's contribution to the lighting of adjacent objects.
- Is there a way to kinda turn off the raytracing from the grass, making the buildings look cleaner? Or is there any other way to achieve that? I've tried several "ambient" and "specular color" settings for the grass, but I may be completely off track.

Not that I think that is a problem.
Make the buildings reflect more diffuse light.

Thanks Dwight, you have my order! Where do you want me to send it?
- But your suggestion just makes the material lighter. It doesn't remove the "dirty" gradient. I guess I'll have to live with it.
