A node-based interface for CineRender surfaces

Node-based setups in other software seem to be more efficient and visually more understandable than the channels / layers system currently in use. Could the interface be overhauled to allow this?

There have been wishes for changes in this department since at least 2017... Unsure if anything has really changed since then since I do not have access to the latest version.
