very cool, yes wasn't using the 'eyedropper' properly.
got it know.
for those wondering.
1. edit > find and select.
2. highlight or turn on 'pick up settings'. (eyedropper icon)
3. add the criteria you'd like to 'pick up' (example 'element type', etc.)
4. <this is the weird UI part> Now use the eyedropper outside the dialog box to pick up attributes of particular object.
5. Should populate criteria with object's attributes.
That's still not quite it.
😉 First, as Laszlo says, you can use the pick up from selection, or eyedropper to pick up an element's properties.
But, steps 3 and 4 are not correct. You cannot control what attributes are 'picked up' (or copied). All of them are always picked up ... just not always used. You only select the attributes that you want to Find / match-similar.
Thus, it is the easiest to see what you're doing by picking up the attributes of an element... and then adding match attributes to the Find/Select dialog as needed to narrow down your search. As you add each attribute, it will show up populated with the corresponding value of the element that you've picked up.
Note, too, the fly-out menu that lets you save your complete search criteria (including values). Thus, you can build a set of common searches... e.g., concrete foundation walls, fire doors, fire walls, etc, if that is of use ... and recall any of them via the flyout. (The flyout menu here ... and in so many places in ArchiCAD ... is the little blank triangle button, in this case at the top right of the dialog. Click those wherever you find them in AC to discover more functionality than one might think is there at first glance.)
Most (?) of us just use the shortcut ctrl/cmd-F, which is the Find shortcut in most software. Not sure if that's the standard shortcut anymore as I've used custom shortcuts for so many years...
