New Extrusion Object

It would be great to have a parametric extrusion object.

A few notes:

  • The object could behave like a hybrid between the beam too and the Railing Tool.
  • The railing tool is much too complicated for most simple extrusions, and the Column / Beam tools are artificially "limited".
  • The tool should be parametric and allow you to select an complex profile, or draw a custom shape.
  • The extrude path should allow multiple control points such as the railing tool, and allow you to "double back"
  • The tool should allow curves
  • Allow "SketchUp Style" Creation: Draw or select profile, select or trace path.
  • The tool could be brought into the Morph tool (like the revolve construction morph) but should keep the control point history.

This was sparked by my need to create custom wall frames and the difficulty to doing so simply with reliable results.

I would say that this is a good fit for a revamped shell tool. I have a wish for Shell - Solid Profile Extrusion which could naturally be extended to complex profiles in addition to drawn polygons. Add to this the segmented extrusion path and we have a super powerful and intuitive tool that would bridge many gaps in modelling methods.

Hi,

Have you tried the profiler add-on?

There is also this object. It is made for grasshopper, but if you add new points to it in the settings dialog, it can be edited manually:

I know these are not 100% what you were asking for, but you might be able to make use of them until the object you asked for is developed.

Thanks @danielk

I had not tried this. I ended up using a "picture frame" object and burying it in the wall to expose only the edges... A much messier work around but at least it is parametric...

You are right, the profiler would have been a cleaner workaround option.

As it stands I am 3/4 of the ways through making my own Paramo version of this Frame tool. If I can get the bugs out and if I can afford the time investment to complete it, I'll post my attempt.
