3DS in conversion error AC15

Hi all, I originally posted this in the data exchange section and got no replies, so I'm trying again here...

I'm having trouble converting 3ds objects to GDL using the 3D STUDIO IN add-on. The converter is not bringing in any data, all it does to a converted object is create hotspots, otherwise the object is empty.
I used this tool about 6 months ago and it worked fine so I went back to that project file to try again with the same 3ds object i used back then and this time the conversion no longer works. The only thing that has changed since then and now is I've installed a hotfix or two.
I've reinstalled the 3D STUDIO IN add-on and reinstalled AC15 hotfix #4 but it's still not working.
I'm not sure what my archicad build number was the last time i successfully used the converter, but I would like to try it out on older builds, perhaps hotfix #3, is there a way to uninstall hotfixes or rollback to a previous build (reinstalling from disc is not an option at the moment)?

Thanks, Nick

Hello,

Finnish version of the 3D Studio importer plugin has been buggy for
years and does not work properly.

The reason is that the generated 3D code has uncommented comment lines,
ie. missing bang (!) from the beginning of these lines.

By opening the generated object and finding/replacing the missing bangs
this is quite easily fixed. If you post or PM the converted object I can check
if this is the case with INT version importer too.

Hope this helps.

Hi Juha,

Thanks for the response. I tried to attach one of the offending objects but the forum won't allow me to upload a .gsm file...I'll try to pm it to you instead. It's a tree object created using OnyxTree, saved as a .3ds then converted to GDL in Archicad. There's a good chance that the source of the problem lies in the fact the .3ds file is created with 3rd party software, however it worked just fine a few months ago using the same process but on a different AC15 build. I don't have Autodesk 3D Studio in order to try the conversion with a native .3ds file...

Anyway I went through the script of the generated GDL object and there just doesn't appear to be any data for the model... have a look and see what you think.

Thanks again,
Nick

Oh...there's no function for attaching a file in a PM

..so I thought I would attached a txt file with the scripts....nope, can't do that either...what exactly CAN I attach to this post?!

Hello Nick,

I checked the object and there seems to be some other reason
for missing 3D than uncommented comments as I suggested.

In the beginning of the 3D script the number of polygons is counted,
but they are not created

!Created from file:"Acer platanoides y2.3ds"
!Number of meshes:1
!Number of faces :8552
!Applied textures:1

....

!Really listed polygons:0

Could you post or PM the original 3ds file?

No problem for me in 15 or 16.

Did you maybe install the add-on after applying a hotfix?
Maybe re-install the hotfix, or better still there is a new one for 15 released just the other day (but it doesn't show in the updates).
You can get it from here.

http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=40958

This will update all installed add-ons distributed by Graphisoft.

I should have read your original post again.
But I would try this latest hotfix.
