How to make a surface transition from cobblestone to grass

Cheers, I want to make a paved pathway that is cobblestone in the middle and as it reaches the borders it has more grass.

I thought of two ways I could do it:

1. draw the pattern I want and create a slab with a hard surface and delete the areas for a grass mesh.

2. make 3 different surfaces in photoshop with different percentage of stone to grass ratio.

Different stone to grass ratio references:

Something like this surface would be ideal:

Should I use any of these two methods or is there a better way to do it?

p.d. The path has curves, so I think the surface method might match properly in the rendered view

Under the 'Density Texture' option of the grass select image and use a black and white map, white where grass grows and black where it doesn't.

Have 3 materials (and slabs) Full Grass, 25%-60%, Full Tile.

It shouldn't be impossible.

This might be of use to you.
