Dimension Tool - Text Field & Custom Texts

I was wondering if there was a way for the text field in the dimension tool to stop reverting to the Auto-dimension Option when i just want it to use the Custom Text tool?

For example, i use i have a total dimension for a flight of stairs, one single string of dimension. then i dimension every single tread but instead of using a numerical dimension, i simply use the Custom Text option in the Text Field & have it say "EQ" (for equal). i made changes to a number of stairs yesterday, but when i went back to work today, some of them have now reverted back showing the numerical dimensions.
