I don't know about any setting that could influence this, but I found this other thread that talks about the slowness of the Startup Dialog, and solutions were suggested (Preferences cleaning, reinstalling Archicad) which solved the slowness issue:

Not sure about this but it could be taking longer if the startup dialog is generating thumbnails. Try setting it to list and see if that helps?

I appreciate the replies. Deleting the preferences didn’t seem to help. Yes using the list option in lieu of the thumbnail is quicker but does slow once the list gets long. I work on multiple different jobs a day so list can populate fairly quickly. Best option I found is to just keep “x”ing out the files to reduce list length. It just creates another step and slows the process of getting to the file I want to open. I wish that we could either limit the number of files or totally bypass the startup browser. I switched to archicad a couple of years ago from a 2d software that allowed me to work as fast as I could think. Having to get use to misc archicad situations where I have to slow down stop and rethink. I’m sure most of that will get better as I get better with the software.
