Meshes are fairly easy to mess up. I ran into trouble once with driveways using a straight edge into a reverse tangential radius (a zero to infinitesimal included angle). Rather than cutting the hole, try modeling the road and subtract it from the site (with upwards extrusion to clear away the bits of grass and dirt that will try to fall back onto the topping coat).
