copying layers

When I copy elements from old projects or from cad files is there a way to not add new layers and put everything on the archicad layer. Sometimes the program will ask me and sometimes it just creates new layers. Can't seem to figure out how to control this

If it's a DWG, just drag it in or use Place External Drawing.
An item from another Archicad project will carry its layers with it unless you
- make it an object (best)
or
- place a view (from the other project, showing the item) on a Layout and show that as Trace Reference - then you can trace it.

Another way is to hide and/or lock all your layers. When you merge the the file it will ask whether you want to show & unlock, create new, or just put everything on the ArchiCAD layer.

Try changing the objects' layers to Archicad layer in the original file before copying to clipboard. You can always undo or quit without saving from the original.
