Zones

Elements carry information about whether they should be deducted from a zone's area and/or volume. Walls and columns are two such elements. Fills allow themselves to be deducted from a zone. This information is inputted in the dialog boxes of those elements.

It may be more important to have the Zone -- ArchiCAD's predominant space element entity -- know what elements' area should be subtracted from _it_. Most users will have encountered the strange effects caused by zones-within-zones, and zones very closely or slightly overlapping, and the interactions of these two circumstances. In substantial buildings where there are thousands of spaces which need to to be tracked, dozens of layers and at least 4 stories, this uni-directional approach to space creation, editing, and management, is not sustainable.

As part of their constitution, we need to be able to specify a Zone which deducts columns and other elements inside it and partial wall footprint area, and other nearly coincident zones which do not deduct some of those same elements. The zone needs to be the input focus of some of this information. It needs to be as smart as the objects it contains.
