To set a default Renovation Status for all subsequently placed elements, use the RenovationThis lets you change to 'new' mode while modeling the new elements, with no extra clicking.

1.1 On a related note, I wish there were more ways to organized the Layer System. When selecting a layer for an item, there is no choice but to view all the layers, instead of the layers appropriate for the item or current view. And they can only be viewed in alphabetical order.

Although you can set the Renovation Status via the Renovation Palette, it still defaults to "Existing" the next time you open the file. If it needs to default to anything, it should be "New."
