Denmark's SolarLab is greening façades

SolarLab energy producing façades are now available as BIM objects

SolarLab’s transformational technology replaces traditional cladding with a durable electricity-producing façade, that doesn’t require any maintenance. SolarLab façade offerings  include ventilated rain screens, curtainwalls, and louvered solutions. They provide a unique opportunity to help achieve net zero, with a fully recyclable and durable solar façade manufactured in Europe using sustainable energy and primarily recycled materials.

With SolarLab solutions, you can cover entire buildings with solar panels that produce green electricity. An impressive use case of the panels is The Copenhagen International School in Copenhagen designed by C.F. Møller. The school has solar panels on all its façades  catching most of the natural daylight.

A BIM object with infinite design options

Together with Graphisoft Center Danmark and ArchiRADAR, SolarLab has developed an advanced and complex BIM object for Archicad that allows you to design façades with SolarLab solutions.

The user interface makes it possible to choose between an almost infinite combination of panel sizes, panel angles, relief effects, and colors. You can also place solar cells in façade panels, which makes it possible to calculate the number of panels, solar cells, and even the maximum installed power of the cells.

Part of the complexity of the BIM object is also a result of the physical limitations regarding which combinations of e.g. panel length and width can be produced and installed. The same applies to the possibility of placing door and window openings that match the design of the building – this just requires a few clicks.

The BIM object is placed as an independent object, and it's therefore easy to use the panels on energy renovation projects. We have also added a function that makes room for insulation on the outside of the existing façade.

A guide to SolarLab BIM objects

To get a thorough overview of the object's possibilities, Graphisoft Center Danmark has written a manual that explains all the different functions.

Now it's up to you to make the world a little greener – one building at a time!
