Workflow Webinars Ep. 4: Life Cycle Assessment in Archicad

Dear Community members,

Who’s ready for the monthly Webinar? On March 14 (9 AM CET) we welcome @Thomas Graabaek, owner of Formfaktor/Graphisoft Center Denmark. In this session, Thomas will discuss how to make the building industry more sustainable, by understanding how to use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to calculate the carbon footprint of your project.  The presentation will shed light on multiple factors, including material use, operational energy, and the demolition phase. Join us for a guided presentation on the use of DesignLCA and EcoDesigner STAR to estimate LCA on your project from the very early design phases to the final product documentation. DesignLCA is a free plugin for Archicad developed by Graphisoft Center Denmark.

About Thomas Graabæk

Thomas Graabæk is an experienced keynote speaker in all areas of BIM, the digitization of the building industry, LCA, and OpenBIM. He holds a master’s degree in architecture from the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 2002 and actively working as an architect for 10 years. In the autumn of 2019, he helped to establish buildingSMART Danmark as a subsidiary of MOLIO and has worked as a consultant for buildingSMART for the past 4 years. In 2020, he became the owner and director of Formfaktor/Graphisoft Center Danmark – the Danish Archicad reseller. In addition to his work with buildingSMART and Graphisoft, Thomas was a partner in a BIM Consultancy company for seven years.

Formfaktor Aps is the team behind Graphisoft Center Denmark. Their mission is to facilitate better design processes within construction and landscape architecture. Taking advantage of the collaborative nature of Graphisoft's products, Formfaktor builds bridges to other software platforms by promoting open standards, strengthening the green transition of construction, and advising on design process optimization using BIM and parametric design.

Presentation highlights

In this webinar, Thomas Graabæk will demonstrate the DesignLCA workflow, an innovative tool that helps the design and construction of more eco-friendly buildings. Learn how this handy Archicad plugin makes it easier for building professionals to check the environmental impact of their projects right from the get-go.

DesignLCA is a tool, developed by Formfaktor/Graphisoft Center Denmark with Lendager Architects, that easily allows you to calculate the LCA of your BIM project, already in the early sketching stages. It uses the inherent data from BIM to conduct LCA calculations. Taking advantage of the 3D model, a rich set of sustainability information, energy simulation with EcoDesigner STAR, and some basic calculation, DesignLCA provides AEC professionals with documentation regarding the overall carbon footprint of their building projects.

DesignLCA calculates the “Global Warming Potential” and provides an “Early Stage” LCA directly in Archicad, including CO2e from building materials, doors, windows, and the energy consumption from operations over a given period.

Key learning objectives:

  • Why LCA is an important part of the AEC industry’s green transition
  • Why BIM, LCA, and sustainability is a strong triangle
  • How DesignLCA can be used to design buildings with a lower carbon footprint

If you missed the previous webinar from the series, you can still catch the insights shared by our previous guest, Graham Whipple, founding partner and head of Resin Architecture. He showcased multiple approaches that have translated to successful integrated design using his small and large-scale projects as case studies.
