Probably be blasted by the pure 3D'ers but you can create a second elevation marker by copying your elevation marker and convert one to a 2d drawing window. Be sure and change the color of the marker so that you can tell which is which.

Go to the Section/Elevation Marker setting and click drop down item "Status of Section/Elevation View", select "drawing". Now you edit as line work.
IMHO stay with live model. Why...
1. The building is never frozen until its built and even after. I use fills and lines over the 3d model where I don't want to model a new object.
2. You will forget to update one view during a design change and issue incorrect drawings.
3. IMHO, if you change all your elevations and sections to 2d you are wasting your purchase of Archicad
4. Use 2d mode only for "quick and dirty" sketches eg option for a design change

Another beginner question. What is the best way to convert a 3D elevation (for example) into a 2D drawing and if possible keep the 3D version. So near the end of a project detail can be added, lines can be trimmed, etc. Thanks.
rather than duplicate the entire sect/elev line, duplicate the
this keeps the 'live' model information in the same window as your 2D drawing of it, and means you can see any changes that have been made to the model at the same time. i would set the sect/elev to 'Manual Rebuild' and update it as and when necessary.
