Roof Problems

I'm trying to make a multiplane roof and these are the results I'm getting.

Pic 1 is me placing a gable end multiroof and pic 2 is me applying planes to it after it's been placed. Why did it switch to a hip roof?

Pic 3 is me placing the roof with the planes already defined but now it's trimming the lowest plane's roof offset for seemingly no reason.

I'm going to break the roof into planes to fix this but if anyone can tell me why it's doing any of this I would really appreciate it.
