detail drawings not updating?

for enlarged plans or details, it seems that AC makes an exploded version so that if the original floor plan or detail is changed, it is not reflected in the enlarged version.

this seems hard to believe and surely i am doing something wrong.

That is correct.
You must right mouse click in the detail window and choose "rebuild from model" for it to update.

Personally I just use a separate section marker set to a larger scale and that updates automatically.
