Just a first attempt… not so good, but enough, I hope, to get the “general” concept!
It’s a parametric object but still in the “alpha version”: sometime it doesn’t display what I really would like and the ridge tiles are still missing.

hi anycg!
I only made the roof surface, however it's quite useful in sections and elevations. I use 2D fills in construction doc's and bitmap pattern in rendering to represent the tiles. Fabrizio's model is great if you want to get a close scene. Should ask yourself what's the purpose of your model to determine which are to be modelled.
If you're interested in many unconventinal shapes I encourage you to start learning gdl through Graphisoft manual or another book such as GDL Cookbook. The later is more fun.
Good luck!

Hi Anycg,

I use gdl's SWEEP command in modelling this West-Sumatran traditional roof. Sweep a polygon then use CUPLANE/CUTPOLY to achieve correct shape.
Very nice result. This should be submitted to Graphisoft's rendering of the month contest. 🙂

Fabrizio,
I have been looking at the image of your roof tile
and I can't tell if the barrel tiles are tapered or
strait. They don't appear to be tapered (can't tell at this view angel).
If they are strait how do they nest ?
The upper end of each tile must fit under the the lower end
of the tile in the next tile row above it.
The only way I can imagine to fit strait barrel tile is to have
a crescent shaped gap at the point where the
upper tile lays on the lower tile.
Your tile don't appear to have such a gap even though shadows are ON.
The curve of the roof plane could account for this
except that near the cupola the roof curve becomes strait.
Thanks,

Peter,

I only "played" with this interesting roof shape.
The tile shape comes from a Nara temple (quite similar to a kind of Italian tile). The tile shape isn’t so important: what I was looking for was a solution for the tile disposition along the roof surface that follow two curves, the first one along the slope direction (perpendicular to the front) and the second one at the ends of the front (parallel to the front).
Using the same routine you can dispose any kind of tile (also the "correct" ones!).

Fabrizio,
Thank you for your reply and your explanatory drawings.
Of course now I'm tantalized by your reference to a routine
that can generate a tile layout on a plane that is curved in two axises
Thanks,
Peter
