layer combinations & quickviews

i'm trying to understand the difference between LAYER COMBINATIONS and QUICKVIEWS.

I see the Layer combinations as 'saved sheets' or saved stories with the specific layers turned on and off whereas the Quickviews shows the specific areas of a drawing.

Did I get it ?

Layer Combinations provide a quick way to change the layer settings to predefined values. This is a global setting. Whatever window you open will display elements according to the current Layer Combination. The Quickviews provide a way to switch between different views of the project (window & zoom) and at the same time reset the scale and Layer Combination.

The Quickviews can also be used in the Publisher (in the File menu) to set up the drawings to be saved for PlotMaker layouts.

BTW, all of these features have been dramatically improved in version 8.1. I strongly advise you to upgrade. It is the most significant revision to ArchiCAD since version 4. The improvements to PlotMaker alone are worth the price.

Not quite. QuickViews are the sheet views (and more) in 7.0 ... since they can (optionally) memorize the layer combination, display options, zoom and scale. Display options control so many things - window/door dimension display vs reflected ceiling, line weight, fill type, etc... and so are closely related to the final 'sheet' display.

Layer Combinations alone merely control visibility and lock (editability and appearance in lists) status of layers, providing only part of the equation (a major part, of course!). In 8.0 and above, layer combinations provide even more power - intersection priorities to control how elements clean up to one another as well as if some layers might be displayed in wireframe in 3D - typically for operators of solid element operations.

I'm with Matthew on 8.1 ... well worth the upgrade; too many improvements to list which will speed your work and accuracy.
