Importing DWG to AC12 problem

When I bring in a DWG placing it as a drawing in AC12
File>External content>Place External Drawing

I am getting what appears to be a blank drawing. However, if I explode it, I get all the drawing information.

I have been going through the translators settings, but clearly am missing the correct one. Placing DWGs is the norm for me for years so what is going wrong here?

I've found a similar situation : AC12 / AC 13.
1. export an AC layout to Acad model space only
2. reopen in ArchiCAD
3. all info is changed automatically to blank drawings
4. select / explode and the drawing info will appear
