Why is it so much trouble to import a sketchup component in to AC 12 and make a GDL object of it. Can someone please show me the simplest way to do that. I have tried ewerything. It is written on severals web pages that AC and Sketchup has married and shall work well together.!!!!!! A bad marriage i will say.Why cant there be a straightforwade way to do this instead of converting to 3ds and all that way around.

You can change the 2D appearance of your object. Select it, then go to File > Libraries and Objects > Open Object. Open the 2D Symbol and make the desired changes. For more information, please see this thread http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?p=117845 .
And one more thing. Instead of saving your file in 3ds format, have you tried the SketchUP Import Add-On http://www.graphisoft.com/products/archicad-solutions/su_plugin_download.html ? I must confess that I haven't tried it yet, but maybe it makes a difference.

Editing the 2D symbol in the GDL script is fairly easy. What I dont understand is why the auto settings imports using the roof tool? I would have thought the Mesh tool would be better?

BINGO!

After playing around with the manual import transfer settings i have solved the problem of huge chunks of material hovering above the object.

I don't know the answer to that question. So, it seems that saving to 3ds would be the best choice after all.

Good to hear that! Guess my previous reply came a little late.
