is there a way to take an existing autocad drawing and use it to set up all the translation attributes so that you save an archicad file for that consultant using his attribute settings, he works on it then sends it back to you to translate back to archicad, using the same translator?

Yes. Define it as a template in the chosen Translator.

thanks, but how do you set up the template file? is it within the translator dialog box or is there a way of telling archicad to use a file, click on it an archicad sets it up?

Talk about wishes!

There is no template to set up, really...What you will have to set up is the translator. While creating the translator, you can specify a particular dxf/dwg to use as a template for data conversions.

There is nothing automatic about it....you will still have to specify all of your font>font, layer>layer, pen>pen conversions...
