Hey Myles.

Are you looking for automatic dimensioning? The location of the menu command depends on your work environment profile. From memory, by default it is under Document> Document Extras> Automatic Dimensioning.

Be sure to select your walls first, then go to the menu and follow all the prompts carefully. Pretty easy really.

Forget the automatic dimension tool.
What could be easier than just using the dimension tool?

Select the tool.
Click on the walls you want dimensioned.
Double click when finished selecting.
Click to place dimension.

The auto dimension tool is OK for the external dimension but I still prefer to do them manually.
By the time you have checked and fixed up any problems and then added in dimensions for columns, deleted duplicates and then move the dimensions so you can add more for the internal walls you may just as well place them manually.
It's just as quick and you get exactly what you want where you want it.

Thanks barry but there must be a separate seeting i have on or off some where which makes this a problem to do - it picks up other wall thicknesses and takes ages

Any other thoughts ?

The only setting I can think of that affects how a dimension snaps to a wall is "Dimension only the core of composite and complex profile walls".

Can you show an image of the problem you are having?

Another thought is maybe you have walls on top of walls in plan.
Can you turn off layers leaving on just the walls you want to dimension.

I find it is a good idea to turn off what you don't want to dimension so you don't have to spend time "Tabbing" to select what you want the dimension to associate to (when manually dimensioning).

Too much surfing in the last five years mate?

If you want to manually dimension the walls, then hide what you don't need, set the appropriate method in the settings or info box (linear dimensions would be a good place to start) and have at it.

Click on wall edges to get the thicknesses, or on their ends if you don't want the thicknesses. Never the midpoint. Keep an eye on your dimension points to make sure they're round (and associated), triple click to finish and hammer them down...

Coming back to you?...

I always dimension walls manually (hiding unwanted layers).
My method is to dimension first the distance between only two walls, and finish that dimension line (double click). Then, keeping cmd pressed, I add all the walls that I need to add. This way, if I don't hit a wall in the right place, I just ctrl+z and keep moving on. As a bonus, I see each dimension as it is being clicked on, which gives me a helpful feedback.
