I have a few ideas on a work around, but I am hoping that someone somewhere knows of an easy fix to get the drawings to be placed externally.
See the image attached, the 3D document drawings are shown as grayed out.

This seems to be a bug in the Import dialog. (I never use that dialog, so never noticed this!) I'm reporting to GS now...
Things do work fine though! Just via a different dialog/method:
At the top left of Navigator or (better) Organizer, press the button and then click Browse to browse to the pln file with all of your detail views. That file's views will now be visible. Just drag and drop the 3DD views onto your layout. Works fine I think?
For some reason, the drag-and-dropped views (now drawings) were set for autoupdate, but I had to select them and manually refresh them to get the contents to be visible. Not sure what that was about...perhaps related to an update problem reported in a different thread yesterday by Raul...
Cheers,
Karl

Thanks Karl, I've never placed drawings that way. Works great now.

Not that it matters anymore since the update, but another work around was to to copy the placed 3D doc drawing from a layout in the original file to the layout in a new file.
