I currently draw a spline, offset this and smart wand an opaque fill into it. This give the desired result but is slow and clunky.

How do you draw your ducting (for 2d only) and what options are available to draw HVAC ducting in plan?

Have you looked at the MEP objects - 2D and 3D at the same time.

I have never really used them myself, but you can always hide the layer in 3D if you are not interested in that.
