What is the font? Standard system font, or a custom one you purchased?
With the boxy type selected, look at the Info Box or settings. If it is for a file moved back and forth between Windows and Mac, the localization can sometimes go off resulting in this... if Arial, e.g., if any localization is appended, it should be Western for you in the US.
Otherwise, it may be trying to display an out-dated symbolic font...
