errant directional mouse dimensions

I typically set dimensions by typing in the X and Y coordinates when the line tool is active and placed. However, lately I can not find a way to make the dimension line go at 0º, 90º or 180º no matter what. Tried preferences for the mouse etc...but still the line goes off a some obtuse angle. This obviously makes it difficult to do working drawings.

You need to set the dimension geometry method in the Info Box. If you set it to angled, it will use the first two points as the direction vector. Try using the vertical/horizontal methods if you can't get the hang of the angled one.

I prefer the angled method, as long as I remember to set the direction properly!

But I guess I am just not smart enough 'caus I can not find a "Dimension Geomitry" in any Info Box on my screen or in tools etc.....
If you could enlighten me in this treasure hunt effort it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about placing a dimension element, or drawing a line that's coming out slightly non-ortho?

NO - What I am talking about is setting the dimension between objects with the line tool (the only way that I know-of to do this) by typing in the X & Y dimensions. I start the line and then type in the dimensions and there is the location. or it should be if the line was not at an angle. If there is a better or different way I would like to know that also.

Yes that system works well for dimensioning a wall once it is drawn. What I am talking about it locating a wall so that it can be drawn the 1st time. I typically use the line tool and type in the coordinates - this results in a line drawn to the lenght that I have s pecified but at an angel,. even when the shift key is held down... that is my problem..and therefore I can not get an accurate floor plan etc. with out lots of guess and it is about here issues. OK ?

Oh. OK.
So not about the actual dimension tool at all.
Sometimes it is hard to understand on here through just typing what people are really talking about.

So, Perhaps you need to check and make sure that:
Your grid isn't Skewed
Your Guide lines aren't set to an off angle
You arent accidentally snaping to the grid

And if your X and Ys are giving you slanted angles when you type them in at what you think should be straight then I am afraid, that is a question for the higher ups here.

Hopefully you will find your cure/reason soon. I can understand how that must be driving you nuts.

It seems that the problem is with your working method. You should not have to draw a line first to place a wall. You can use guidelines and/or relative co-ordinates.

eg. if you hover your cursor over a point, type "X (distance) + ENTER" ( so thats the X key then input distance then PLUS key then ENTER) your cursor will jump to a point to the right of where you started (minus goes left, if you use Y instead of X, plus is up, minus is down).

Does that help at all?

I am sure that your way is fantastic, but I can not get it to work for me. Not with AC 11 on my MAC today at least...thanks. but for now it will all be apx's and reseting the dimension numbers I guess.
