I was working with a designer overseas (I am in Atlanta, Georgia) to help me design a lake cabin. She was using Graphisoft/Archicad and we were making good progress. We are almost finished, but she has disappeared and I do not have a good way to finish this. I thought about downloading the program and trying to learn it myself, but it is quite expensive. I also considered a less expensive design program, but I do not know if I can upload the file. And honestly, I do not know how easy it is to learn these programs. I think I would rather work with a professional. Please provide any suggestions or advice.

Hi Brian,
I can understand it’s a difficult situation. I think your assessment is on the right track. When you say ‘almost finished’, is it Schematics or Construction Documents? ArchiCAD (AC) takes a lot of time for one to be proficient, especially to produce contract documents. In any case, you will likely need a license on the permit set.
You could contact Graphisoft US directly for a list of architects/builders with AC (preferably in Atlanta to easily access the cabin site), which could avoid some time and cost as they would already have their document standards and libraries set up.
You may also contact an architect/builder with another program as the AC model can be imported into other BIM programs and they can produce/finish the CDs from that model while working in their preferred program.
Others here may have other ideas. Hope this helps.
Note: I realize they don’t have to be local, but it’s makes it a bit easier to address site issues, regulatory requirements, and perform construction observation.
