Bring GDL to Life and Make the Objects You Want, with Karl Ottenstein

Friday and Saturday, March 17-18, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Digital Vision office, 7047 E. Greenway Pkwy., Ste. 250, Scottsdale, AZ USA

  • Join one or both of these back-to-back workshops to learn to create your own custom objects to improve your productivity, the realism of your models and imagery, or the accuracy of your drawings.

If you’ve never made a custom object in ArchiCAD before, start with Day 1: “The Object-Making Everyone Should Know”.

If you’ve never created an object by programming it in GDL – Graphisoft’s Geometric Description Language – then Day 2 is for you … even if you are signing up for Day 1!

Day 1, March 17: The Object-Making Everyone Should Know

Learn how to create your own objects and customize existing library parts. In a step-by-step fashion, learn how to create not just custom furniture, moldings, windows and doors but also custom structural and decorative elements that are shaped and rotated to meet your design requirements. Increase the level of detail in your models, drawings and renderings, while increasing your productivity. Some elementary GDL scripting will be covered, although the majority of modeling will be done visually with standard tools. Some third party visual object creation tools will also be demonstrated if time permits.

Prerequisite: a working knowledge of ArchiCAD and no experience with GDL.

Join us and learn how to:
  • build your own custom library parts using ArchiCAD's familiar Slab, Wall, Mesh and Roof tool
  • customize standard ArchiCAD library parts by adding custom parameters and rotatio
  • import manufacturer 2D and 3D DWG/DXF files as library parts
  • create objects from models created in other 3D programs, like SketchUp, or those easily downloaded
  • use tools that create objects for you (e.g., Profiler, Trussmaker, ArchiForma, SketchUp)

Day 2, March 18: Making Parametric Objects - Introductory GDL Programming

Learn the fundamentals of creating parametric GDL objects with the basic concepts of Graphisoft\’s Geometric Description Language. We will work through increasingly complex examples of 2D, 3D and parameter scripts to create objects whose display behavior changes based on parameters and stretchiness. While it would take at least two more days of training to master GDL, this day will provide a firm understanding of the essentials that are sufficient to create and modify a variety of objects that will improve your day to day productivity.

Prerequisite: creating objects as taught in The Object-Making Everyone Should Know class, above. No prior GDL coding whatsoever.

Registration:
$295 for one day, $495 both days;
Additional people from the same firm: $250 for one day; $400 for two days.

Have you ever had an aspect of your design that you could not model in 3D, and so resorted to drawing it in 2D, or not at all? If you drew in 2D, you compromised your productivity. If you omitted the concept, then you compromised your design.

Don't compromise!

Learn what every ArchiCAD user should know after they have learned 'the
basics'. With your own laptop in a lab setting, learn how to create
building elements, furnishings and more to increase your productivity as
well as the level of detail in your models, drawings and renderings. This
class will quickly pay for itself as you put these custom object making
skills into practice!

What:
'The Object-Making Everyone Should Know' Day 1 GDL Workshop (beg)
'Making Parametric Objects' Day 2 GDL Workshop (int)

When: March 17th & 18th, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
