Tip of the Month, September: Realistic environment around your model in Archicad

Professionals and students out there, how do you show your building’s environment with high fidelity in Archicad? Modeling it is an alternative that will certainly take up quite some time and compromise model performance. @Hmooslechner is here to provide you with an innovative solution, and help you make your digital models more eye-catching and engaging using Archicad.

Using this tip, you can quickly enhance visualizations directly in Archicad and project presentations in BIMx.

Note that this trick requires Archicad 27 or later and Physically Based Rendering in 3D must be enabled in your Work Environment settings, like this:

Here’s what you can achieve

A skydome in Archicad where the external surface is transparent, and the internal surface is a 360o picture of the actual surroundings of the site.

Here’s how

  1. Click here to download the Archicad file which includes the “Dome einfacher” GDL object created by Heimo. Remember to turn on the Physically Based Rendering in 3D (Work Environment settings)
  2. Take a 360o picture with dedicated equipment or download an application for your mobile phone which can create a similar .jpg file
  3. Add your picture to the embedded library in Archicad: File > Libraries and Objects > Library Manager
  4. Edit the GDL object settings to assign your picture (insert the name as it appears in the embedded library):

For more details on the engineering behind this GDL object, check this video.

Thank you @Hmooslechner for sharing this clever solution for easily displaying the site surroundings in 360o with high fidelity. An additional round of applause for developing this project so thoroughly and making the solution as user friendly as possible. If you’d like to share your feedback with Heimo, head on over to this forum post to do so.

We also recommend you take the chance to discover the Archicad objects and video tutorials that Heimo has worked on for many years:
