Saving display options/preferences

Where are my preferences/display options saved to? I read the ‘Read Me First’, but I still cannot find my Basic and Lasting preferences, and I cannot find a .prf file anywhere on my system. I performed a ‘new and reset’ only to find all my windows, pet palettes etc. were also reset. I would like to be able to set all my preferences, comfortable in the knowledge that I can get them all back quickly should I make some mistake, or have need to re-install ArchiCAD.
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

for a question like that it would be really helpful to post your computer/operating system specs: the files that you're after are saved differently on each platform and for each archiCAD version . . .

also, you should be aware that preference files are among the first to become corrupt (at least on a mac!), so you should be careful when backing them up for future use to ensure they are 'clean'. . .
