www.archibase.net
It has many good looking GDL objects for FREE! But whenever trying to download objects, instead of getting an object downloaded to the download manager, I get text in my browser downloading. I believe it is Greek or Russian, but I am not positive.
So, does a GDL object have to be written in english to be used in the US. I hope not because the site has some very nice objects.
Any help, is appreciated!

to keep them proceed as follow
"You need to right click on the "download now" if you are on mac —I don't know for PC…—, and you need a software like Unrar to extract the .rar archiv. "

The parameters of most of the objects of Archibase are in english…
All over internnet —if you want…— you can find objects in English, German, Italian, French, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Czech, Finnish or Hungarian of course…
For you to persuade some to thus pass to make a turn on this "directory" of French bonds... Annuaire FC CADlink

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Just for my own knowledge, is .rar a new compression software, or is this the default compression in Europe?

On my Mac I use .sit or .zip. I discover .rar when I find the Archibase site.
You can download UnRarX here : http://unrarx.sourceforge.net/ or rar expander here
Some information about the .rar format here : http://www.buyrar.com/index.asp

I found that many of the thumbnails fail to appear, and try as I might my browser refuses to show them! This is somewhat frustrating - I am left selecting objects on a trial-and error basis. Similarly some of the objects have identical thumbnails, which is misleading!!
BTW am I right in thinking that many of these objects are not (very)parametric, and some are converted 3Ds objects - with, as a consequence, hundreds, if not thousands of lines of code?

Not completely false, but the origin of the objects on this site is various their qualities too.
But some GDL objects are not easily parametric like some furnitures, sanitaries or objects
if you want highly parametrics free objects try this three links :
—The library of Olivier Dentan here http://perso.wanadoo.fr/archilib.od/
—Some objects of CU Mirco —accessible after free registration — in CAD 3D Italia here http://www.cad3d.it/
— Another one, with some from Franck Beister here http://www.opengdl.org/
They are in French, English, Italian or German.
I Hope that you enjoy them.

Stuffit Expander 7 does expand .rar. It is a recent development, not sure with what version it started doing it.
