I cant purge an expired license key and as such can not launch the program. This interface is really poorly designed.

I'm very sorry to hear about the issue!
It is possible that it was only a temporary error, I would suggest to try the purge again.
If it is not working please follow the steps below:
1. Upload all licenses back to the pool
2. Stop Codemeter service:
On Windows: Open Codemeter Control Center > Process menu > Stop Codemeter service
On macOS: Open System Preferences > Codemeter > Stop Service
3. Move the license container elsewhere (or put them to the trash bin). The container(s) is located at:
macOS: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/CodeMeter/CmAct
Windows: C:\ProgramData\CodeMeter\CmAct
Make sure to remove the contain inside this folder only. We need an empty CmAct folder.
4. Start Codemeter service again:
On Windows: Open Codemeter Control Center > Process menu > Start Codemeter service
On macOS: Open System Preferences > Codemeter > Start Service
