Sedum Roof's - Archicad

Anonymous
Not applicable
I'm a student so bare with me! - Just a question really.

I want to do a sedum roof, one that is flat at the top then curve's back into the landscape. I want to show this in my 3d model, However I'm not sure how to do this, has anyone ideas? all the textures seem to be typical slate roofs?

Is archicad capable of moddelling a 3d detail for the roof too?

thanks all

You have challenged yourself with a multi-stage exercise. It will be best to keep your clothes on during this exercise in order to avoid distraction.

-- model -- you might consider using the mesh tool to model complex bridging between the landscape and the flat roof. Archicad also has a "Barrel vault" roof tool that allows for complex curved roof arcs. But it is naiive to think of this as a being a smooth transition. Speaking from a technology viewpoint, you might like the observer to THINK that the roof flows seamlessly back into the landscape, but in reality it is necessary to make a clear distinction between the structurally-supported and the natural. The external landscape moves a lot while the building is intended to remain stable. This is difficult to reconcile. Use this reality to help the model AND your design look more sophisticated.

--material - any material can be used to surface any element. By "sedum" i assume this is a form of grass? Use grass or groundcover materials for the roof... or use this texture and make your own material:

--detailing - You can certainly model everything in archicad including your roof detail. But a student's need for a detail is not the real architectural technologist's need. At any rate, most detailing is best done as drawn linework over a section from a model descibing the basic forms of the building. This opinion is controversial - we constantly discuss how far to model and how much to "draw." You can imagine tha the purists want more model because of the payback in a completely-detailed and coordinated building, but if you are doing just one explanatory detail, a drawing on a basic model might be best.

Thankyou very much Dwight, you have helped a lot. It's great that there is a community willing to help students out unlike autocad!.

I have downloaded and printed the tutorial book. I will try and work through that this week.

cheers again! a happycadder
