I happened to look in the finder and see that it is showing a file creation date of 12/31/1969. This really can't be good.
Does anyone know anything about this?

The creation date is indeed pretty strange to see! But, I think the over 300 MB size of your file might be more related to the slowness. Run (download if you need to) the Polycount add-on to check how heavy your model is.
The creation date thing is a little worrisome... suggesting perhaps some file system corruption. I'd do a repair disk on the volume holding that file to at least locate/fix the most obvious disk issues.
Age of hard disk?

Thank you, Karl. I ran Disk Utility and found no problems on the drive. I think that this hard drive is original to the computer (2008?).
Through the drawing manager I've gotten this file down to 187 MB. I'm going to look for the Polycount add-on. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

My truck's name is Aunt Clyde. She is the best truck in the world. Seriously.
