well i got one step further....
my problem now is that when i go to the attribute manager and under the fills tab a liner and radial fill type appears. However, when i click on the fill tool to use and the settings window pops up, these two fill types arn't listed.
So how do i get a fill type that shows up in the attribute manager to become a useable fill type?

many thanks
It depends on what you want to use the fill for...when you define a fill, you are given 3 options: Drafting Fills, Cover Fills, and Cut Fills -- this determines which fills are available in the different dialog boxes. Gradient Fills are Drafting Fills and can be created with the Fill Tool only.
