Close the 3D window red button in the upper left hand corner. Also, in the Work Environment (Options/Work Environment), disable "3D Settings changes bring 3D Window to front"
The only way you would get to the 3D window that way would be if someone actually issued a keyboard command (Command+3), picked it from the menu or hit a 3D view in Navigator.
