Modifying Line Types

Apologies in advance if this has already been addressed, but I couldn't find anything.

Is there a way to modify the letter shown in an existing line type? For example, there are numerous lines that show every kind of water line imaginable ... can I take one that has "HPS" and just change the "HPS" to "CTV" for cable TV?

I know that you can make a custom line type, but I'm not having such good luck with that - and it seems like it would be easier to just modify an existing line type.

The line types you refer to are all symbolic line types.
You can verify this by selecting one of them and see
that you can copy line type components which is not
possible with say "dashed" or "double dashed".
Those letters are made from very short line segments.
To make make new letters you will have to draw them
in the plan and paste them into a new line type.
