Roof Display Problem: advice needed

Anonymous
Not applicable
I have a gable roof that is overframed onto another gable roof, but the eaves of this roof go under the roof that the ridge runs over (confusing??).

Here is a perspective to give you an idea. My problem is, on the roof plan, I want it to show correctly, with the eaves hidden by the upper roof, but the ridge running onto the upper roof. If I change the display order, the entire roof will display above the other.

Is there an "Actual view" setting for roof plans or something?

BTW, for some reason, the preview of the first image I've attached here is completely different than what I've actually attached. I've never even seen the preview image before...

Please click on the attachment to see the actual condition. I have no idea what is wrong with the preview.

Unfortunately it is not as automatic as you might like. You will have to change the display order, but with the upper roof following the line of the valley (i.e. not a continuous straight eaves line) you will get the right representation there, and draw the lower roof extents with a dotted line.

That is very weird

Stuart,

Not sure what you're suggesting. Should I set the display order so it shows one portion of the roof correctly, then use a fill to cover the line of the roof shown incorrectly, and use a line to show the edge?

Hello Steven,
Have you tried enabling cover fills for the higher roof ?
I drew two roofs one at elevation 10 feet and another
at elevation 5 feet and drawn so that it was partially
covered by the higher roof. I selected the higher roof
and enabled cover fill and selected solid fill, cover fill pen
white, and hit OK. Now the lower roof is hidden where
it is covered by the higher roof.

Peter,

Hi. Yes, cover fills are enabled. My problem is one roof goes both over and under the other roof, so depending on which roof is on top, one part of it is shown incorrectly.

I've managed to remedy it by using a cover fill to cover the part not correctly shown.

Using 2D work to hide 3D problems seems to be my focus these days...

See image below. Green outline is main roof, and follows line of valleys. Orange outline is intersecting roof. On right hand side all roof planes have cover fills on with white background, and lower roof is sent backward (or upper roof brought forward). Then just draw a line to indicate the outline below the main roof.

Hello Steven,
I re-read your first post and realized you have "over-framed"
the lower roof on to the higher roof hence no true framed valleys
and therefor the cover fill trick won't work.
Thanks,
