Trying to create new material

I have been trying to create a new material. I can copy an old one, but I cannot get the color to change in my model as well as trying to create a new type of siding (T-111).

Is there a proper procedure for this? I am using the student 8.1 version.

I get some support from the instructors. Most used Autocad, there is only one who teaches Archicad.
