I forget how far back AC14 will open older version files. You may be able to open it directly or you need to use AC10, 11 or 12 to bring it up to a format that 14 can open. This has been discussed before so you could try a search. You may also need to use "Merge" instead of "Open".
BTW: this does not belong in a wish list forum as it is not a request for a new feature or improvement to the program. "Working in ArchiCAD is probably the appropriate place.

There is one problem (from the AC9 Getting Started file):
But you will not be able to use info from these files in any commercial project.
The Educational versions of ArchiCAD have a different file format thanSo you will be able to open these files only in the EDU version or the program will switch to EDU mode when they are opened. I don't know which will happen because I don't have the EDU version.
the commercial versions. PNE and PAE file formats are the educational
equivalents of “solo project (PLN)” and “solo project archive (PLA)”,
respectively.
