3d model slowing down

I have a project in which for some reason the navigation in the 3d view slows to a snail's pace. I've tried turning off layers, cancelling SEOs, relocating the model closer to the origin and even merging the file into a new one. None of this has worked. If I open another file all is normal - there is plenty of RAM (1G) etc. Doses anyone have any ideas?

Nik,

thanks for the reply but I have already tried that. I can turn off all effects and it makse absolutely no difference. In fact I've started getting a wierd effect when I open the 3d window sometimes the bottom half of the screen is completely black! The problem is only with this file as all others work normally. The back up has the same problem so it really is a problem. I've never had anything the same as this happen before and I've got a feeling that something has become seriously corrupted in the file somewhere.

I think I may start a new model - fortunately it's only a concept model at this point so it shouldn't be too painful. In my ArchiCad experience I have found that sometimes strange things happen that no one can explain. If someone can sehd some light on it I would definitely appreciate it!

Hi,

can you give us data about your hardware?

Hardware

Pentium 4 3.0G HT/1G Ram/NVidia GeForce FX 5700 256MB video card/2x19in Samsung LCD screens.

I had a display problem in the past which was fixed by updating the video card driver - it is now version 6.1.7.7.

Software

ArchiCad 9 (AUSTRALIAN) on Win XP Pro SP2

Are you running any NVidia software other than the driver?

Woody,

I'm only using the driver software. Interestingly enough I decided to check the nVidia web site and discovered there is an updated driver 6.6.9.3. I have now downloaded it and installed it successfully however it has made no difference to this file. Exactly the same problem persists as before.

Fortunately it is early on in development as so I have started a new file from scratch and are copying parts of the old one into it step by step checking as I go. I had a somewhat similar problem once before where a file kept crashing in the 3d view. I found that if I deleted one particular wall from the model evrything was fine. Why this should happen I have no idea - all I know was that it worked! I suspect that there is some element in this current file that is upsetting things. I'll let know how it goes.

I have some problem with the OpenGL engine in ArchiCad 9, it crash when using some combinations of object. But I never had speed problem.
What engine do you use?

I have a strange problem that is somehow tied to using dual monitors. I have a different video card, but have found a solution to an un-useable 3D window. I open up the project I am working on in Archicad and then go to the control panel (display - settings tab) and disable my second monitor. I then return to Archicad and open the 3d window. After doing this I return to the display control panel and re-enable my second monitor. It sounds crazy, but this solves my problem until I open a new session of Archicad. Perhaps it is worth a try.

Ian:
You and I have almost identical hardware including video cards!
I had the same problem as you, the 3D window was sloooooowww on orbiting and zooming..etc..
My problem was a driver issue. For some reason AC9 didnt like the driver (57.22 I think).
Try driver version 67.22. Works fine with me.

let us know.

Thanks for the replies.

I use the Open GL engine - because generally it works much better. The dual screens and driver all work fine as well - the only problem is this file!

I've opened a new file and am copying parts of the old model across - so far all is working OK. It would be interesting to know why this has happened - but my main problem is to get the job done.

I think the moral of the story is not to rely just on the one back-up but rather to keep a series of back-ups at critical stages throughout a project. If a file gets corrupted without you noticing at first you can easily end up with a corrupted auto back-up.
