Trace another .pln file

Can anyone help me out the best solution if I need to trace out another .pln file?
Can you do this with virtual trace? Does virtual trace only support internal files? I noticed in AC12 there are more advanced x-ref options for layers. Does this work with pln, or should I just use modules?

I wonder what are the users using for this.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, No, Yes, depends.

Try and play with the different options to see which one helps you the most.
I recommend the place External drawing option instead of the mods if you only want to trace.

Well external drawing option is the kind of approach that I am looking for, but when I try to do it with a .pln file. it is automatically adding the drawing to the layouts. I am looking for a way that I see them in floor plan or elevations, so I can trace like a ghost story.

Modules give this option I guess, but than all the layers are imported with them and I want to keep my layers as they are before the import.

I am doing something wrong, I am sure there is a way to trace a pln file while keeping my layers etc.

Thank you for your respond.
You can import the external drawing into a Worksheet, then use the Worksheet for Trace.

how do i import? x-ref or external drawing or module
they all seem same as importing to a plan
They will probably all work. You can also just copy/paste from one plan onto another, but if you paste into a Worksheet, it will be a 2D representation. But if you're just tracing, that should be fine.

Probably the only consideration is whether the import method will create new layers. If you Xref, for example, you can later detach and get rid of the extraneous layers.
